What is herbal medicine?
Herbal medicine is the art and science of healing using the power of plants and nature, and it combines traditional medical knowledge with modern medical science.
Plants have been the core of medicine in humankind throughout its existence up until the last century and they still do so in many parts of the world today. A large percentage of modern drugs today are plant-derived, e.g. aspirin’s acetylsalicylic acid is a synthesized molecule based on the natural compound of salicin, which is found in white willow/salix alba and a few other species. Both tradition and modern science based on pharmacological, but also clinical trials, prove the medicinal value of thousands of plants (over 32.000! https://www.oeb.harvard.edu/news/2025/12/mapping-earths-medicine-cabinet-ancient-roots-medicinal-plants) and more and more promising research highlights plants’ great potential for novel drugs.
Western herbal medicine is based on the evolution of medicine in Europe and the New World. It carries the ancient tradition of Hippocrates, the father of modern, organised medicine, which lived through Roman and medieval times and is still carried on in Unani medicine (Greco-Arabic medicine) of Central and South Asia. It is informed by modern medical science and it incorporates herbal traditions from all over the world, including Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Native American and African traditions.
In short, it carries the knowledge of medicine and mastery medicinal plants that humankind has been gathering over the millennia of its existence and therefore, a deep understanding of what plants are, what humans are, and how we all interconnect in biological life.
Qualified medical herbalists in the UK undergo a rigorous study at Bsc level and clinical training of at least 500 hours; they are trained in physiology, physical examination, diagnosis and pharmacology, as well as in plant-drug interactions and counseling. They can prescribe herbal formulations and give nutritional and lifestyle advice, offering safe relief from a variety of acute and chronic dis-eases, including but not limited to:
- Inflammatory conditions
- Low immunity and Infections
- Menopause and perimenopause
- Metabolic disorders, obesity and diabetes
- Musculoskeletal problems
- Nervous system disorders
- Nutritional imbalances
- Pains
- Respiratory complaints
- Simple First Aid
- Sleeping difficulties
- Skin problems
- Stress and anxiety
- Thyroid and adrenal imbalances
Herbal medicine, however, does not treat diseases but individuals. Medical herbalists look into your constitution as well as your medical history, current health and life circumstances, and will seek to choose the right plants for you, which will be being adjusted to your needs for as long as needed. Herbal medicine is, in fact, collaborative medicine, as it collaborates with orthodox medicine, different forms of complementary medicine and of course the patient.
How does herbal medicine work?
Knowing plant chemical and energetic signatures, their routes of action and their interactions with drugs and other plants, medical herbalists use whole plant extracts rather than single constituents, which preserve the plant’s identity and therapeutic power in combination with safety. They work towards restoring the body’s equilibrium and thus, resilience, opening the way to long-lasting balance.
Herbal medicine is patient-centred, as all symptoms may have variable causes and the same causal factors are expressed in different ways among different people. All of us are unique, so the history of an individual plays a most important role in navigating through disease back to health. At the same time, for therapy to be successful, it needs to adjust to a person’s individual and changing circumstances. The process of healing becomes thus, a partnership, whereby the patient is heard, informed and empowered to take control of their health and life, with the help of nature and the guidance of the medical herbalist.
Plants are the creators of life on earth as we know it, they are our ancestors, our source of life, and quite naturally, also our healers.
Consultations
As living organisms, we all possess an innate healing intelligence, which for various reasons can be disrupted or halted, causing thus, apparent health problems. Consultations are the time we have together to unravel what went wrong and make a plan on how to support you back to health.
What to expect in your 1st consultation
The appointment lasts 1 – 1 ½ hours, during which I will listen to your story. Starting with your symptoms I will look into your health history and constitution, your medications and/or supplements as well as any medical tests you might bring, your diet and lifestyle, and I will also ask questions about all body systems so as to assess their function and their implication into your health issues. If appropriate, I might perform a physical examination for example take your blood pressure and pulse rate, look at your tongue, hands and feet, check your lymphnodes, listen to your chest etc. Your health records are kept safe in the clinic and serve as reference for any future appointments even if you come back years later for a completely different reason.
I will then propose a treatment plan that addresses your individual needs, goals and circumstances, trying to appease symptoms and heal deeper causes at the same time. I will also give you nutritional and lifestyle advice. It might take a couple of days for me to check on your medical tests, do extra research if necessary and prepare your herbal prescription, usually in the form of tinctures, herbs and herbal teas, oils, tablets, ointments etc. The treatment might include supplement suggestions and I might also suggest that you ask your doctor for specific tests.
Healing is a journey, not an event; my purpose is to work with you and the healing power of plants so as to restore your organism’s physical equilibrium. This journey might include interventions that concern nutrition and a specific herbal treatment, and possibly the realization of harmful agents that you can try to avoid. If you wish and feel it’s appropriate for you, it might also incorporate breathing and relaxation techniques, or another important routine in your everyday life;
An average course of treatment lasts 3 to 4 months and is definitely worth the cost. Symptoms or simple ailments maybe soothed much faster, whereas chronic and more difficult problems might take longer for apparent changes to be seen. Fees include consultation, research time needed and a herbal prescription which you might get from your pharmacist. If you choose to get your herbs from us, remember that they are chosen to be of the greatest therapeutic value. Your personalised herbal tea would cost about 15-20 euros a month, whereas for example tinctures, being more concentrated herbal medicines, would cost about 10-15 euros a week. A fee of 10-12 euros is charged for the preparation time needed for the whole prescription.
Remember: The patient’s personal involvement cannot be substituted by any magical herb or drug. We all play an active role in the condition of our health and life.
Online consultations are possible. However, it is advisable to try for in–person meetings at least once and whenever you can.
To take the most out of your 1st consultation:
Download and fill in the form about your personal details and history and send it via email together with any medical tests you might have relevant to your issues. This is not a necessary step as we will go through everything during our consultation, but it will save us time.
Please fill-in only the sections in red fonts
Follow-up consultations
The first herbal Follow-up consultation lasts about ½ an hour and it is usually scheduled at 2 weeks after the initial appointment. We will talk about how you feel with your herbal treatment and answer any questions you might have. We will also catch up on anything that you might have forgotten to say in your first consultation; you will start to observe your body more and it is not unusual for someone to observe patterns and make connections for the first time. We may also talk about the plants that are the primary actors in your treatment and anything else that needs clarification for your start in your new journey.
Subsequent herbal appointments are scheduled every 2-4 weeks or according to individual needs and also last about 30 minutes. Each time we will be catching up on health state including medical tests if needed and how you respond to herbal treatment. We’ll also talk about nutrition, lifestyle and any new concerns and necessary changes to the treatment plan. We can always arrange a separate Follow-up session so as to discuss in detail how desirable nutritional and lifestyle changes might be feasible.
It might take me 1-2 days to review your treatment plan, make any necessary changes and prepare your herbal prescription. Fees include research time needed.
